Your New Year’s Resolution: Stop Taking Notes

January 4th, 2018 in

It’s the start of a brand new year – welcome to 2018!

By now you’ve probably sat down and drafted up your New Year’s Resolutions.  Maybe you want to be a better person or lose a couple of pounds.  Maybe you want to learn a new language.  Many of you have said to yourselves, “I want to be more present and focused”.  That’s where we come in.  We propose you become more focused and more present in your meetings at work.  We propose you…

STOP TAKING NOTES IN YOUR MEETINGS.

If you can focus more on the people in the room and the challenges you face, you can be more successful than ever before.  Its proven that people waste time in meetings.  According to a study by 3M Meeting Network, executives report between 25 and 50 percent of the time spent in meetings is wasted.  That’s because people are not focused.

It’s easy to get distracted.  You have alerts popping up.  People go off on tangents.  Your stomach is grumbling (we can revisit the diet resolution later).  If you can be more focused in meetings, why not do it?  If you can put down the pen and paper and look up at the people you are meeting with, whether its in person or over video, you can be more effective.  If that doesn’t convince you, then think about these…

5 additional reasons why you should stop taking notes and let Eva do it for you…

  1. Taking notes hurts!  All that writing can eventually lead to all kinds of problems like carpal tunnel or other hand cramps.  We don’t want you to get hurt!  We want you happy and healthy for many years to come.

  2. If you have to keep asking, “Can you repeat that”, the meeting will go on far longer than you want.  We know you need to get back to watching cat videos at your desk, so let’s get this show on the road!

  3. If you’re focused, you can get more done.  If you don’t get things done, the end of the meeting is going to turn into an arm wrestling competition to see whose ideas get followed up on and we don’t want that to happen.

  4. Meetings can be fun!  If you’re paying attention, you can learn a ton!

  5. If you don’t invite Eva to a meeting, Eva will be bored.  Nobody wants to be bored.

So stop taking notes and let Eva do it for you!

And Happy New Year!!
